Phrenology, the "science" of reading the human personality from bumps on the skull, was brought to America by German physician Johann Spurzheim. It was founded on the theory that the brain had 35 to 45 sectors, each the site of a particular character trait such as appetite, combativeness and benevolence. Phrenology gained an enthusiastic following in America and spawned a whole industry producing phrenological paraphernalia. Cranial "maps" could be purchased to chart the topography of the skull and reveal the subject's true self. Although phrenology was ultimately rejected as having no basis in scientific fact, it reflected 19th-century scientists' growing interest in the workings of the human brain.
